Christopher's Story
Christopher is a 63-year-old man who had a stroke when he was 50. This impacted not only his health but his lifestyle, In 2017 he was then diagnosed with severe spinal stenosis and this reduced his ability to get around even more. His occupational therapist referred him for an assessment as he now needed more care than his partner could manage. He was initially awarded a care and personal assistant budget and this yea a short break budget.was included. SDS options were very helpful and they visited us at home to discuss the various captions available to manage the fund.
We decided to choose option 1 as we felt this gave him more involvement on how the budget would be spent to suit his needs.
His partner helped source a care agency and this was paid directly from the accountant we employed with the budget. Through time we found that the care company was not always reliable and recently decided to employ carers ourselves. We now have a small team of hand-picked staff who help make Christopher's life more enjoyable. They look after his personal care and take him to appointments, shopping.and the Cinema. The short break budget allows him to have anything from a day out or a holiday here or abroad. The choice is his and we are able to purchase care from a private company to attend to him when he is home or abroad. He is looking forward to the first holiday abroad in years and the fund will pay for his requirements.and a personal assistant to accompany him. He is also able to enjoy his hobbies again and keeps tropical fish and he also has a Koi pond in the garden that he enjoys all the year-round.
