Option 4
Option 4 is often referred to as the pic and mix option as you can choose a mix of options 1, 2 and 3. Everyone's support needs are different and people require different types of support to meet their different needs. Also some people may like to take a little control of their support but not all of it or try managing only a small part of their budget initially to see how they manage.
Example 1 |
A lady who requires help with personal care and preparing meals would also like to be able to go out shopping and on days out. She asked the council to continue arranging her personal care and help with meals under option 3 but chose to take a direct payment so that she could employ a personal assistant who could assist her to go shopping and take her on days out or go for coffee and a chat. Having a personal assistant has allowed her to be able to do do things she previously couldn't as she uses a wheelchair and needs someone to help her around places she is not so familiar with.

Example 2 |
A day centre is closing down and those who attend it have been offered the option of going to another day centre or having an SDS assessment to look at other options. Most of the group chose to go to another day centre but one man chose to have an SDS assessment. With the support of his social worker he decided he would like to continue to go to a day centre 3 days a week so that he could still see his friends but he would like to go to college to do an evening class and also go to play boccia at the local leisure centre. He didn't want to manage any money so he opted to use option 2 and asked the council to arrange for a support agency to provide a support worker to assist him to go to college and the the leisure centre.
